After researching information about the site's purpose and target audience/demographics we can begin arranging the page elements. This is an essential step in planning for the success of your site. Every site needs a design that is user-friendly, fully functional, and aesthetically pleasing; all incorporated with the client's ideas or vision of the site's main purpose.

Using flowcharts is a good way to map out your site's navigation (more on available styles below) or how your pages are related to each other. This will help to establish the correct "flow" for links like "Back/Previous" or "Next". Flowcharts help us determine how pages should be related to each other, like the family tree of your Website. They can be made elaborately in a software program such as Adobe Illustrator or done in a few sketches with paper and pencil.

This element should be carefully considered as it is related to the planning of layouts and will guide your visitors throughout your site. The navigation should be clearly defined, using no more than one or two words (for quicker comprehension), and may be set up using HTML text, buttons (pre-made and custom), graphic text bars that would go across the top of each page (like this site), or even tall panels preferably set to the left of a page but may be in the center or to the right.

Many designers prefer not to put the panels on the right of pages due to various monitor sizes, fearing that users may have to scroll to the right to find the information. Since most people are better accustomed to reading down, then across; users might get "lost" and frustrated which may cause them leave the site. Even if they don't get confused, most people prefer not to scroll to the right. You might also decide to use an image map or other pictures that would correspond with the purpose or destination of the link.

Navigation should be made flexible as well, to allow for future growth of your Website.

Graphic links, such as those used on this site and others in my portfolio are not made with templates.

The most commonly accepted image formats for the Web are GIF and JPEG. GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) is THE format type for illustrations, animations, transparent images and lighter file sizes. JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) which is, of course, recommended for photos.

Some fonts are better used as graphics - especially if it is a font that has been carefully selected to go with the site's theme or purpose. Visitors must have the font installed on their computer in order for the type to appear the same as the designer/client intended.

Animations can be custom created using variations of your logo or another graphic of your choice. We would start by gathering the information (any images/text) and discussing what sequence they should be placed in. We will also plan how fast the animation is and how long it will be set to loop.

Many sites generate traffic by using animated banners, and I like to think of them as virtual billboards except they take up a lot less space and they can provide the element of motion that catches the eye. You want a banner that will appeal to your target audience; a banner that will entice people to click into your site and see what you have. They should also be light in file size so that they will load up quickly.

Sound can be added to your Website in a few ways: One is to have the file set to play in the back round on page load or at another scheduled time; You can embed the file so that visitors can control when and how often the song is played; Or you can link to a file with an image or text callout which would open the file in a media player program.

Movies (made with Flash, SwishMax or another tool) can be embedded into an HTML page and provides the element of motion (similar to a banner advertisement, but on a larger scale). Many of the programs used to create them also provide tools to enable visitors to interact with them (such as with games). This is a service that jenniferblair.org is unable to provide at this time.

Organize your emailing into departments with POP email aliases! You've probably seen them before:
Info@yourdomain.com - Sales@ - Service@ - Comments@, etc.
You can set them all to forward to one address. Keep your personal address private and avoid the hassle of having to check numerous inboxes. You will see which "department" the email is coming from in the TO: field located in the email header. The most basic Web hosting plans offer the option to create 10 different Web based boxes and forwarders.

A few things are required to process forms. You can use a "mailto:" value that will email the results to a specific recipient but this is not recommended for transmitting sensitive information. A secure server or form-handler is recommended for sending personal information for residence, payments, or anything that you want to keep confidential.

Another method to establish a relationship with your visitors is to use message boards or guest books. Boards/Forums can be locked to the general public with access given to groups or certain users or open to
the public for registration, allowing anyone to reply to topics or create new ones. Some forums may also allow the administrator to create survey/poll questions. Guestbook's are a handy tool for visitors to leave general feedback and their email address.

Backend databases require knowledge of other complex coding languages such as SQL (Structured Query Language) and Visual Basic. This is useful for companies that have different locations and need to share and update information with distant co-workers and clients/visitors. Businesses likely to use this option would be banks, medical or pharmaceutical companies, and wholesale/retail distributors to name a few. For this type of service, you would need a Web Developer.

Hosting companies have a variety of plans to suit your needs from space for personal use to many solutions for businesses that are either starting out or have been established for some time. Some hosts might register your domain for you and automatically set DNS servers at an approximate cost of $15 per year while others require that you find a separate registrar. If you register the site separately, we would have to make sure that the DNS servers are set correctly. When you sign up for Web Hosting, they should send you a confirmation email that will include your username/password, plan ordered, helpful links and the DNS server information. When the domain is registered, you will be given the option to "Park Domains" and will be provided with a few fields to fill in the DNS server locations - usually two fields per domain including a Primary and Secondary address.

It may take 24-48 hours for DNS server changes to take effect on the Web if the registrar is separate from the Web host. If you are not at all familiar with setting DNS servers properly and need to use a different registrar, I will be able to set this up at no extra cost. Just forward all email confirmations that are received from the Web Host/Registrars. I do require that you sign up for them personally so that there are no questions of fraudulent activity from servers or any third party service provider. Only you are authorized to approve of the selection and payment of hosting plans. If there are questions about your identity, service providers will be reluctant to give of their services which will delay the whole process.

Most servers also offer software for eCommerce shopping carts, processing forms, SQL, FrontPage Extensions, Web mail, sub domains (www.jenniferblair.org/portfolio), personal CGI bins, secure servers, and more. Some also offer a few MB of FREE space, great for personal Web sites with the option to upgrade services or purchase additional space.
